Sample Sale Pr0n: Navigating Sample Sales

Hi pron friends, I hope you’ve been well during our time apart.  Today in Shopping Pr0n, we’re going to discuss the “Sample Sale”: websites that are devoted just to designer extras and samples.  With patience and determination you may be able to find top designers, at deeply discounted prices; they may be new or straight off the runway, but they’re almost always in limited quantities and sizes.  Act quickly!

Jenny Dyer London Turquoise Dress

Jenny Dyer London Turquoise Dress

Even if a store is not just for sample sales, if you’re willing to risk losing a piece of clothing, or buy for next year, you may be able to get what you want drastically reduced when there are only a few sizes left.

Two of my favorite colors for Spring are cobalt blue, and turquoise – I’ve been showing them to you non-stop: in Spring Color TrendsSunday Brunch, and the Almost March Edition of Pr0n Plus.

This turqoise Jenny Dyer dress is from Catwalk to Closet, which is designer samples and extras.  I chose it also because it’s available in UK 12-16 (US 10-14ish).

This dress retails for £325, but is selling for £60 or about $85, for a top of the line designer dress.  Do you pay for the name with designer clothing? Sure.  But you also get outstanding fit, fabric and quality.

.

Here’s my first attempt at a suit outfit.  This matching thing is harder than I thought!  I’m working with a suit by the unfortunately named Hickey Style.  It’s a tan cotton/wool twill suit, originally $1095, now $385.  The jacket is a 3-button, with flat-front pants.  It’s made in the U.S.A., and available in a smattering of regular and long sizes.

I love a man in a suit

Clearance Sale Suits

I picked out two shirts: the dark blue is $89, down from $225 at Barney’s Co-Op.  It’s cotton poplin, which is kind of a heavier weight cotton.

With either shirt you could skip the jacket and put it with the pants and these Ted Baker perforated boots from Bluefly, or use the jacket and a pair of dark wash jeans.

I loooove a man in nice shoes, but even I fall asleep eventually looking at them, which is why I like the detail on the top and sides of these boots, size 13; they were $210 and are now $87.99.  The shirt has a small navy, white and burgundy floral pattern, and I chose a sky blue, navy and burgundy tie in a wider pattern by Moschino at Forzieri

If you keep things in the same color genre…it should work.  We’ll learn together, my little pr0n papayas!

The other shirt is a beautiful bright blue with alternating blue and purple stripes.  “Vibert” is at Bluefly; $54.39 down from $125.  I tried two ties from Hickey Style at Bluefly; a brown with white, and an orange with little green army men. :D  Men, please let me know how I did here!  Would you wear these?

.

Here’s another way to wear orange: with green and brown.  This outfit ended up having almost an ethnic feel to it.  The orange and white tunic is from Tory Burch, a designer whose logo flats became so ubiquitous so quickly that every bone in my fashionista body rebelled.  Eventually more of her line came out and I was in love.

Tory, Lily, Robert & Kate

Ethnic Casual for Spring

Anyway,  the tunic is from Catwalk to Closet and retails for £165, but sells in a Size 6 for £65 (about $90USD).  Buy it before I do!

With the tunic, try these Robert Rodriguez Latte Capris (or any capris) with an embroidered waistband (multiple sizes!).  Normally $275, yours for $90.89.

We’re working with orange as the main color, and accenting around it.  I didn’t intend to put the outfit together this way, but usually colors will be “in” for a season, and you’ll find lots.  The necklace is on sale for $98 at Shoptwigs; the flats are Lily Pulitzer: originally $248, now $79 at Simply Soles.  Why?  Because they’re only in brown, size 6.5.  But we could have worn them in green to match the necklace.

Finally this cutie pie of a Kate Spade tote!  Usually $295, but at SmartBargains.com for $119.97!  You’re lucky I don’t buy totes…

.

I always save my favorite for last; this set just makes me squeal with delight!  I’m such a girly girl, so anything that makes me feel that way makes me happy.  Again, every piece in this outfit just kind of came together.  Start with this Chloe (!) A-line purple skirt at Catwalk to Closet.  Pronistas, this is a £475 skirt for £99!!!!

Iris

A girly set in yellow, green and purple

So…$130, 100% linen, French sizes 38 & 42 or US 10 & 14ish. Unbeliveable!

Choose from two blouses: the yellow is Juicy Couture: $89 down from $178 – sizes 10-14!  The white blouse is from Graham & Spencer at FunkyLaLa (funky!).  Originally $250, now $75!!  I can’t stop using exclamation marks!!

The cute purple clutch is at Bluefly, and about half-off at $53.09.  The croc flats are Sam Edleman’s  from celebrity-fave Kitson L.A.  Once $95, now $41.

Okay – my favoritest pieces.  These adorable yellow/green sunglasses are dvb, which I actually didn’t know is Victoria Beckham’s line.  LOL. Bad Fashionista!  At £60, they’re still a fun splurge, but it’s better than £165.  Finally these pumps!  Yellow patent leather Colin Robertson, peep toe, slingback, gradiated 4″ heel for $65 at Kitson, sizes 6-10!  Are you ready for this? Originally $345!  I wish you could see how excited I am. :D

.

Well!  Good deals are exhausting!  If I’m lucky, I’ll have ready for you tonight Pr0n Plus: The very best in plus size fashion.  Pr0n Plus is every Monday, my lovely pr0n addicts!

.
Until then, it was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?

Color Pr0n: Spring Fashion Color Trends

TBags Batwing Jersey Dress $106 at Bluefly

TBags Dress $106 at Bluefly

Hi pr0n stars!  Spring is about to…spring!  We’re about to spring forward, it’s time for spring cleaning, a young man’s fancy turn to love, and according to my sources color is back.  I don’t know where it went, but I’m glad to see it.  I have so much color to show you today: lemony yellows, coraly corals, and rosy pinks, just to name a few.

I’ve been beating the drum about how big cobalt blue is going to be this season, and (as usual) I’m right!  Check out this delightful cotton jersey dress by Tbags.  It’s got a deep v-neck (you can always throw a cami under it), ruched shoulders and bustline, and this marvelous abstract/floraly green, cobalt and orange print.  Throw on a cardigan and a pair of flats and try wearing it to work.

This style is so flattering and forgiving; whether you’re trying to camoflauge a tummy, or hips, or thighs and a rear – this dress is just going to skim right over your problem area, open up your neck and face and make you look great.

.

I broke out my new toy again.  I love toys!  People tend to shy away from yellow and orange, when in fact they can be extremely flattering colors.  In the middle is a buttery yellow raincoat by Alice and Olivia; this heavyweight cotton is a perfect fabric for Spring.

Orange you glad you're not a lemon?

Center, going clockwise: Alice + Olivia jacket $303, TopShop USA shoes $110, Rebecca Beeson Tunic $29.99, Kate Spade Tote $221, Kate Spade Hobo $275, Nanette Lepore jacket, $249

I love the contrast coral buttons, and I found lots more coral.  To the left is the Nanette Lepore cotton “Come Together” jacket; the ribbon will help create or accentuate a waist, and along with the 3/4 length sleeves it will also draw up the eye .

On the right is a bright red Rebecca Beeson cotton tunic – again, a tunic style  that skims over like this will camoflauge a multitude of sins.  The shirt just looks so comfy, doesn’t it?

I’ve paired everything with coral chandelier earrings by Amrita Singh because almost everyone can wear coral (check out the little hearts!), and adorable lace-up “Jasmine” pumps from TopShop USA that come in two other colors.  More color!

Finally, two great Kate Spade bags; Union Square Opus in yellow is a structured hobo style  that also includes an adjustable shoulder strap (two bags for the price of one!)  and comes in lots of other cheery colors; Tamarind Cove Kyle is a nubby cotton tote that also comes in navy.  Collect both. :)

Pink is the New Black

L to R: BCBG blouse, $113; Rachel Pally dress $248, Milly sweater $202, Kate Spade case $125, Oliver Bonas Necklace £6, Coach bag $358, Costume National skirt, 198.

Okay, there’s a lot to look at in this set, pr0n petunias!  In the middle is Rachel Pally’s “Carrie” dress, which comes in sizes 14-24.  (This is Pomegranate. See it in Baltic and Blossom @ Nordstrom); to the right is my favorite designer, Milly, with a Cashmere Rugby Polo Sweater from Revolve Clothing; back on the left is a BCBG flutter sleeve pleated blouse (WANT THESE TWO), available at Bluefly.

If you’ve got the legs, show them off in this hot pink pleated mini-skirt by Costume National @ Zappos Couture.  I’d tone down the rest of the outfit.  Maybe a pair of flat boots…and a thin turtleneck sweater with 3/4 sleeves I’m thinking.

Back around again, how much do you love this purple Coach leather Sabrina?  Go ahead and splurge, the little glass beads right above it are only £6 at OliverBonas.com!  Colorful accessories like that are great to brighten up a neutral outfit, like a suit.  Try pairing lavender with something unexpected like brown or green.  You can stow all your accessories in the Kate Spade patchin place large colin; it’s big, over 7″ wide.  There are two smaller cases on the website if you’re looking.

..
Bringing up the rear is another one of my favorite topics: dresses!  (I love dresses!)  Petite frames should jump at Shoshanna’s fuchsia silk square link dress; curvy girls of any size stay away.  It’s a shame since my heart is breaking over the pops of turquoise and orange on it.

Think Spring

Top, going clockwise: Shoshana dress, $210; Suzi Chin for Maggy, $128 ; Yoanna Baraschi, $220; Emilia blouse, $38; Vera Wang dress, unavailable; Design History ermine dress $72

Plus sizes, I never forget you.  I fell in love when I saw this green matte jersey shift dress by Suzi Chin for Maggy Boutique.  If you click on the picture to see it larger, you can see the banded neck and hem, which I think is a great detail; it comes in sizes 14w-24w at Nordstrom.

Lookie at the cobalt blue used again for this ’40’s styled Yoana Baraschi silk swing dress.  I’m just not sure a pale-face like your dear blogger can wear cobalt.  If I can, I’m snatching up this dress when it goes on sale at Bluefly.

The “Emilia” red blouse is also for plus sizes; it’s a wrap style, which works on almost everyone, and would look fab on it’s own with a pair of dressy pants and heels, or under a suit.  It’s going fast and is available in a smattering of sizes >14 in Tomato, Black and Chocolate at b&lu (Go ahead.  We’ll wait.).

Almost last, but by no means least is a Vera Wang dress, which seems to have become extinct.  Ah well, it was nearly $500, anyway.  Can I offer you a green Vera Wang in a size 8 as an apology?  I promise I’ll make it up to you with a carmine red Design History jersey pleat dress.  This also has a very sweet, retro feel to it, and would look fantastic with a pair of classic square heel pumps like these.

This should keep you shopping for a while, pr0n pals!  Do let me know what you think; I love your comments.

Handbag/Manbag Pr0n

Pr0n friends, I am one beat blogger.  But I always have energy for you, especially because I got to use my new toy for today’s post: Polyvore.com.  Using Polyvore means I get to show you lots more goodies, and who doesn’t like more goodies?  Today we’re going to talk about handbags and manbags: all colors, prices and styles.  Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Red Hobos

Red Hobos

Red Hobos – by dinsquared on Polyvore.com

This is a hobo*.  These are also hobos.  The hobo bag is a curious creature in the wild, in sizes ranging from just enough for a wallet, cell phone and keys, to “Excuse me, Ma’am.  Are you hiding an Olsen Twin in there?”

Hobos’ common thread is their slouchy appearance, which can also vary in degree of slouch.  The pro to a hobo bag is it’s comfy casualness.  It’s nearly always a shoulder bag, and comes in lots of variations.

The con to a hobo bag is that you risk looking like…a hobo.  Generally, the more structured a bag, the more “formal” its appearance is; the less structured, the more casual.

The other downside is that you wind up kind of throwing everything into one big smooshy lump.  Good luck finding anything in there.  Even an Olsen Twin.

All details and links are at the Polyvore link, but quickly starting in the middle and then going clockwise:

1) Kate Spade Northampton Charlie: $235.85 at Couture.Zappos.com; 2) Thugs and Kisses Oversized Hobo, $175 at LunaBoston.com; 3) Phoebe Canvas Tote, $19.80 at Forever21.com; 4) (bottom)Rebecca Minkoff red patent leather ‘Mini Nikki’ shoulder bag at Bluefly, $345; 5)Rebecca Minkoff Nikki Hobo Bag – Persimmons, $600 at TheHipChick.com; (top left); 6)  AE Large Textured Hobo, $39.50 at AE.com.

Men's Messenger Bags

Men's Messenger Bags - Manbags, baby

Men’s Messenger Bags – by dinsquared on Polyvore.com

Folks, men have stuff just like women. They need to carry their stuff places, just like women.  Isn’t it time for a little bag equality among the sexes?

I’m proposing the Bag Equality Act of 2009, whereby all men making under $250,000/year will be given a Man Bag – free!

Until my movement gains momentum however, I urge all men to invest in one with their own funds.  Few things say “I’m a grown-up” like a nice bag.

Many of them come big enough for your laptop,  they come in all fabrics and styles, and you can collect them for all occasions: work, weekend, dinner – you decide!

Again, complete details available by making with the clicky, but starting with our friend the gray man, and this time going counter-clockwise (humor me): 1) Marc by Marc Jacobs Textured Patent Zip Messenger Bag, $219.99 at Bluefly.com; 2) Mark Nason Messenger Bag, $625 at EBags.com; 3) Ben Sherman Commuter Bag, $79.00 at Tobi.com; 4)Jack Spade Greene Street Canvas Nylon Field Bag, $154 at Zappos.com.

I saved this red bag for last on purpose.  I love this bag so much, because it’s actually a daddy diaper bag! Check out the link for all the information on this DadGear Courier Retro Stripe Bag, there’s plenty of it.  I found it for $59.95 at Bagsbuy.com, and it also comes in blue, green and orange. ♥

Bowler Bags

Colored Bowlers

Bowler Bags – by dinsquared on Polyvore.com

Bowler Bags (named because of their similarity to actual bowling bags) are very trendy right now, and for the last few years.  It’s a fairly classic shape, so I’m expecting this style to stick around.  Remember the divine white bowler I showed you in Clearance Pr0n?

Generally a bowler is going to be a medium to large bag; they’re maybe 60% handbags bags, and 40% shoulder bags.  They frequently have shorter “drops”, but may look deceivingly long, so be sure to try them on.

Bowlers are also usually much wider at the bottom than at the top, making the bag somewhat bulky where it hits around your hip if you’re wearing it on your shoulder.  I’m not discouraging you from a bowler – I adore bowlers.  I’m just passing on my shopping pr0n knowledge. :)

Aren’t these bags adorable though?  It kind of makes you want one in every color.  Or maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, details at the Polyvore link; starting with the model and going clockwise: 1) Hayden-Harnett Trophy Bag in Blueberry, $678 at Haydenharnett.com; 2) Latico Leathers Candy Strip Bowler, $150.35 at ebags.com; 3) Vangi Front Pockets Grained Leather Bowler Bag, $261.71 at Forzieri.com; 4) Uptown Girl Bag by Big Buddha, $66 at Fredala.com; 5) Vera Bradley Black Microfiber Pleated Bowler, $50 at VeraBradley.com.

Spring Green

Green Totes and Satchels

Spring Green – by dinsquared on Polyvore.com

Don’t tell the other sets, but this one’s really my favorite; it just came out so pretty with all the springy green bags, don’t you think?

This set is about smallish structured bags; as shoulder bags,  they may be called “satchels”; as handbags they may be called  “totes”.  I call them pr0n.

Advantages: these are structured bags that can go from work to weekend, and things will more or less stay where you put them.  They may have an inner pocket or pouch or two or four, and they frequently have a space just for your cell phone!  They may be expandable, or have an outer pocket, and they’re just ubiquitous and classic.

A tote or satchel will never go out of style, you can always find it with the latest color or trend (buckles, zippers), and they’re easy to find in every price range.  If you’re stranded on a desert island and can only bring one handbag (quélle horror!) , bring your satchel or tote.

I love all of these; I want to bring them all home with me, and I don’t usually like green!  Starting with our fine headless model and going clockwise: 1) Chloe Ande Small Expandable Canvas Tote, $1375 at Net-a-Porter.com; 2) Cole-Haan Small Village Box Tote, $170.82 at 6pm.com; 3) Merona Green Tote, $17.99 at Target; 4) Michael Kors Push Lock Shoulder Satchel, $378 at MichaelKors.com; 5) Kate Spade Noel Small Coal Tote (Green), $123.55 at Zappos.com; 5) Olivia Harris – Grey and Green Leather Tubular Satchel Tote, $495 at ShopKitson.com, and finally – 6) Tory Burch Patent Burch Tote, $395 at saksfifthavenue.com.

So there we are.  I’ll be using Polyvore more in the future to show you how to put together outfits, or examples within a category or just because I’m bored and you’re a semi-captive audience. :D Really, thanks for being here, poppies.

Over the weekend, I’ll be doing a post on…something.  But Monday is always the latest edition of Pr0n Plus!

As always, it was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?

A couple quick notes my pr0n popsicles: *a hobo is  a term that’s not really used any more because it’s actually a homeless person.  Homelessness is a serious issue; please don’t throw things at me because I made a joke.
A huge pr0n shoutout (sh0ut0ut?) goes to thefind.com, which is this amazing website where you tell it what kind of product you’re looking for, and you can narrow it down by color and/or price and/or store if you want, and it pulls from more sites than you could possibly find in a lifetime.  There’s also like.com, but I find that I like thefind better.  (Get it? Yeah…Sorry.)
