Dresses for Your Body Type: The Petite Apple

If you’re petite, 5’4″ and under, dressing well, particularly in skirts or dresses, can be a challenge.  And if you’re apple shaped – top heavy, a bit lumpy in the middle, with smashing legs-  it can be far too easy to wind up looking like a big lump.

My BFF K rang me up recently, in need of a dress to take her through a few occasions, with about $150 to spend.  Her challenge, proves that anyone with any body shape can find what they need and still be fashionable, and in budget.  K is a pretty average petite apple, but she has one specific need: long sleeves to cover a tattoo.

MaxStudio.com - SHIRRED DRESS, $138

MaxStudio.com - SHIRRED DRESS, $138

What I went looking for in a dress to flatter K, and would for any petite apple are three things: 1) Either an empire or a dropped waist dress – a true waist will call attention to her tummy.

2) A loose fit in front. If you’re doing two pieces do not tuck in your blouse.  You need it to cover anything extra between your waist and hips.

3) A hem length at or above the knee. For a petite, anything below the knee is going to make you look overwhelmed and dumpy.  In a sense you’re lucky: skirts that might be too short on a taller woman can be an appropriate length for you.

.

When I think floaty dresses, I think Max Studio.com.  This shirred, tuxedo front dress will flatter a larger chest, cover arms, and show off legs, with no one will be the wiser to anything you don’t want to show around your stomach.

An open neckline will balance a larger chest – and most importantly, the chest is just decorative not stretchy.  If you have a large chest, you don’t want anything that’s going to stretch over it.  This is ruffles, not elastic.  Its conservative enough for a business dinner, and formal enough for a wedding.

Generra Tunic Dress

Generra Tunic Dress, 6pm.com, $178

.
This tunic dress from Generra at 6pm.com is slightly over budget, and a similar style to the first.  But since it’s not quite as floaty and a little more contemporary, it’s a nice comparison.

Made out of silk and cotton, it’s a great deal at 30% off the original price.  Notice that the basic shape is the same as the first dress: long sleeves, open neck and straight from gathers at the chest.

It looks mid-thigh on the mannequin, but will likely hit lower on a shorter woman.  The contemporary style is a little more casual, but it can easily be dressed up with accessories, and the silk will help it look dressier.

PAROSH Shirt Dress from YOOX, $155

PAROSH Shirt Dress from YOOX, $155

I adore everything about this next dress at Yoox.  From the silver color, to the rough silk fabric, to the modern shirt-dress cut.

It’s a winner in my book, and it’s selling out fast. It’s not a completely long sleeve, but on a petite it should be long enough to get the job done.  Worst case you could put a sheer long sleeve tee underneath

This particular dress could be very flattering for all shapes:  on an apple it’s going to flatter a tummy and show off your great legs.

Even pear shapes or hourglasses could find this accommodating to hiding a hip-y area while flattering a waist – or it could be too tight around the bottom and have no shape around the waist.  You’d just have to try it on.

.

Diane Von Furstenburg - Short dress, $195 on YOOX

Diane Von Furstenburg - Short dress, $195 on YOOX

I don’t know what it is that’s got me showing all blue dresses, but that’s just what I’ve been finding.  This Diane von Furstenberg short dress is different from the others I’ve shown, because it has a dropped waist.

Ideally the sash will hit around the hips, and the dress will be looser everywhere else.  For you apple shapes with your flat tushes and nice legs, by all means try this type of dress.

A lightweight cashmere dress such as this one is virtually seasonless: just put a long sleeved t-shirt and tights underneath it when the weather gets chilly.

Mixie "Maggie" Dress at Green Apple, $150

Mixie "Maggie" Dress at Green Apple, $150

I finally found a pop of color at Green Apple, this neat site that showcases new and unique designers.  Mixie is a local Orange County, California designer.

“Maggie” is made out of Modal, which is a slightly more casual looking fabric, but between the color and the style of the dress, I think it’s sufficient for a slightly dressy occasion.

At 36″ long, it could be a touch long to be in proportion, but if you can wear a pair of nice 3″ heels with it, that will adjust accordingly, or you can get it hemmed.  A good tailor is your friend.

Eve Gravel Air Dress at Mudshark Streetwear, $165.60

Eve Gravel Air Dress at Mudshark Streetwear, $165.60

Pr0n stars, I searched high, low and everywhere in between to fine just one more fabulous dress for all of you.  I found it at Mudshark Streetwear, a fabulous online Canadian retailer with a simply enormous selection of unique, reasonably priced clothes, much of it eco-friendly.

I absolutely love the mix of ’80s and ’60s style in their Gravel Air Dress.  The top is a raglan sleeve – it’s hard to tell whether or not it’ll stay on both shoulders.  If not, wear a cami underneath, or have a tailor put one of those lingerie bra buttons in.

The slightly lowered waist has a matching belt with a pop of white button, and then attaches to an above-the-knee slightly A-line skirt with white front pockets.  It’s all together in a stand-out indigo color.  For a dress that matches your attitude, look no further.  Your budget will barely stretch at $165.60.

.
I hope this post has shown you a variety of styles that will work for your body type.  I love dresses because of their ease and flexibility.  It’s so easy to make them different by putting on a blazer or sweater or different jewelry or hose or tights.  K, I hope there’s something here for you. :)

Until next time, it was good for me.  Tell me, was it good for you?

Net-A-Porter Super Sale!

Thanks to my friend Grechen, over at Grechen’s Closet, I was tipped off that designer mecca site Net-A-Porter had taken another 20% off their sale prices.  Net-A-Porter definitely runs towards the true designer end of the scale, so even deeply discounted is going to cost you a few pennies.

Doma Stitched Leather Jacket, $242.50, Sz. L

Doma Stitched Leather Jacket, $242.50, Sz. L

But if you’re one of my readers who invests in this type of clothing, or waits for this type of sale to spend your money, there are deals to be had.  I’ve tried to pick out only the most worthwhile to show you.  FYI, all products are linked to via their pictures.

.

At just under half price (was $505), this Doma stitched leather jacket is still a steal.  You’re looking at a red leather collarless jacket with stitched detailing around the neckline.

The jacket has long sleeves, two zipped pockets, a zip athrough the front and is fully lined.  It’s available only in size Large, which is probably going to be around a U.S. 10.  It’s like buttah, and it’s going to be gone in a heartbeat.

.

Tibi Bow Collar Dress, $177.60, Sz. M,L

Tibi Bow Collar Dress, $177.60, Sz. M,L

Tibi is quickly popping up on my brand radar for their beautiful blouses and dresses in feminine fabrics, colors and styles.  This particular dress reminds me of Milly NYC, which has been a great diappointment to me Spring/Summer.

You all know what a fan I am of retro influenced styles, especially ’60s/mod looks.  This coral mini-dress is made in a heavy jersey with a large bow at the neckline, elbow length sleeves and a side zip.

Sizes medium and large, or about U.S. 8-10 can get this on sale for $177.60, down from $370.  Pictures, please!

Marc by Marc Jacobs Short Wool Coat, $264, Sz. S-L

Marc by Marc Jacobs Short Wool Coat, $264, Sz. S-L

Often you can get a good deal by buying off season.  If you’re good at delayed gratification, buying for next fall or winter is a great idea.

Think how cheery this coral Marc by Marc Jacobs short winter coat will make you when you walk through a sea of black and grey.   Everyone should have a longer formal winter coat, and a shorter casual one.

This was originally $550, but is on sale for $264, and is still available in sizes small, medium and large.  It’s 80% wool, 20% nylon with a back pleat and satin lining.

.

"Calisten", Cotton/Acrylic Grape Cardigan, $78.45, Sz. L

"Calisten", Cotton/Acrylic Grape Cardigan, $78.45, Sz. L

Since I don’t wear wool, I find it difficult to find really cozy, soft sweaters.  This grape colored cardigan by Malene Birger looks so soft and so comfortable for a size Large.

It’s a cotton/acrylic blend with a round neckline, long sleeves, white beaded buttons and front pockets to keep your well manicured fingers warm. :)

I particularly appreciate the edging at the cuffs and hem, which will help a good sweater keep its shape.  “Calisten” retailed for $245 and is now an incredible buy at only $78.40.

.

I have a confession: I think these Tory Burch Jelly Reva flats are adorable.  I know, I know.  I can’t help it; every fashionista has their weakness.

Tory Burch Jelly Reva Flats, $38, Sz. 8/8.5

Tory Burch Jelly Reva Flats, $38, Sz. 8/8.5

But listen: aside from cobalt blue, sunshine/schoolbus yellow is the color this season.  I snatched up a Dooney & Bourke handbag in the color on sale and I just adore it.  I get complimented on it all the time.

If you wear a size 8/8.5  shoe, these normally $98 flats are on sale for $38! You all are lucky I rarely wear flats, otherwise we’d have to throw down.

Sizing info says to go down half a size if you wear a half size, and they’re available in an 8.

.

Yesterday, I was reminded by my good friend Heidi (who writes a really thoughtful size acceptance blog) that a good handbag is an investment.  Especially if it’s not too trendy, it’s something that you’ll have and use for years.

Mulberry Large Soho Shoulder Bag, $278

Mulberry Large Soho Shoulder Bag, $278

That’s why I’m recommending this Mulberry Large Soho bag, for $278.  To start, you can’t get a good designer bag for $278 unless you’re very lucky.

This is a classic shape in a not-too-trendy color.  Be careful, as it may be a touch more orangey than it appears, depending on your monitor.

Soho has an adjustable shoulder strap, and silver hardware including a turnlock, which is a very safe closure.  The inside is lined in twill.

See here, and check out this picture for a sense of how big it is – it’s definitely roomie, and has a nice drop long enough to be worn on your shoulder.

Best of all – handbags have no size.  Anyone can wear them. :D  Last but not least, for more deals check out The Outnet, Net-a-Porter’s “bargain” little sister.

Thanks for reading, my little pr0n plums!

As always, it was good for me.  Tell me, was it good for you?

Pr0n Lust List 6/15

I’m often asked to explain the concept of “Shopping Pr0n”: actual pr0n could be defined as looking at sex that is displayed in a  highly stylized manner which has been made to look appealing, in order to arouse you.

Shopping is my pr0n.  I love to look at fashion, some of which has been made to look particularly attractive and is certainly appealing to me.  “Pr0n Lust List” will be what I’m lusting at around the web.  Hopefully some of these pieces will find a “forever home” with one of you, most precious pr0n stars.

..

I’ve almost bought this Juicy Sundress at Tobi more times than I care to admit.  It’s just so sunshiney and comfortable looking.

Juicy Linen Sundress, $131, Tobi.com

Juicy Linen Sundress, $131, Tobi.com

I love the wide straps and the empire waist with the wide sash.  So why haven’t I bought it?  One, it’s $131.  For a sundress.  Even I have my limits.

Two, I’m uncertain about how Juicy fits.  The one time I tried on their tops they were cut small in the chest and um, that’s not going to work.

Finally I’m worried about the low back.  If the entire back of my bra is going to show, it’s a deal breaker.  If you’re pear-y, but smaller on top, consider this dress (and send pictures!)

.

Julie Brown cotton/silk, "Margie" at Bluefly, $172

Julie Brown cotton/silk, "Margie" at Bluefly, $172

Speaking of dresses I shouldn’t want, but do, I’m gaga over this Julie Brown diamond print “Margie” dress at Bluefly.  It’s just so…fabulously Twiggy to me.

Margie has a rounded neckline with a button close panel, it slips on and has 3/4 length sleeves and a cotton voile lining.  I’d like to see this on a fabulous brunette or Norweigan blonde maybe.

Sizes 2-8 with great legs can still snatch this up for $172 (and send pictures!).  Step away from the white go-go boots and try a pair of retro-stacked pumps.

.

Priorities "Off-Shore" Jacket, $82, Bluefly

Priorities "Off-Shore" Jacket, $82, Bluefly

This Priorities jacket from Bluefly will be mine!  I love layering shorter things over longer things; it can be a really flattering style because it draws the eye up to where you’re smaller, but still lengthens (with the longer piece underneath).

Normally I frown on one button jackets for busty girls, but because the stance (where the top “V” on the jacket) actually hits here, it’s an exception to the rule.  It’s not a classic one-button style, which are typically for petite women.

$82 is a little high…maybe I can wait until a 20% off sale rolls around.  But omg, how cute is the lining??

Kate Spade Tarrytown Small Maedea, $???, KateSpade.com

Kate Spade Tarrytown Small Maedea, $???, KateSpade.com

Kate Spade is taunting me.  That’s right, they’re doing this just to hurt me personally.  They keep putting on sale their Tarrytown Small Maedea in Robbin’s Egg Blue when I don’t have money, and it’s making me cry.  Dear Kate Spade: I can has July 4th sale pleez?  Luv, Din.

I saw the bag when it first came in and nearly cried because this bag is made for me.  For me, people!  Except that I can’t buy a $575 handbag.

The other day it was on sale for $4something and then another 25% off, which brought it down to around $350, which is still expensive, but realistic for a really nice handbag.

I’m not getting an iPhone ’til the holidays, so this could be my birthday present! (I really can justify anything.)  Still, I wait.

Bettye Mueller "Bingo", $129 at Simply Soles

Bettye Mueller "Bingo", $129 at Simply Soles

Bettye Mueller sure got it right when she named these shoes “Bingo”.  They’re on sale over at one of my favorite dream stores, SimplySoles.  $129 is a fair price for a pair of designer shoes, and a great price for a pair of Bettye Muellers.

These are just the cutest things I’ve seen.  Where else would you find a red, white and blue Madras plaid on a pair of 1.5″ kitten heels?? <3  Simply Soles has them in stock in 5.5, 6 and 9.5.

I’m tempted to wishlist them…just in case.  But if you buy these, my little pr0n pudding, send pictures!

See by Chloe Daisy Rosette Dress, $347, Tobi.com

See by Chloe Daisy Rosette Dress, $347, Tobi.com

For my last lust of the week, I want to show you a dress that is so unique.  This See by Chloe Daisy Rosette dress looks like a painting.

The combination of the simple design and the dreamy pattern make this dress a winner for somebody, and not this poor model who looks so unhappy.  What gives, Tobi?

$347 on final sale (was $695), European sizes 38 – 44, which are U.S….4-10?  I can see this on some fashion-forward beauty with dark hair and pale skin.  Or maybe a redhead!

I played with this dress over on Polyvore (and actually if you’re a 40 or 42, you can get it for $240 on Net-A-Porter) but I’d love to see someone rock it in real life.

.
Alas, if I were to share with you everything I was lusting after it would probably take up this entire blog.  But I hope you’ve enjoyed some of my favorite pr0n this week!

As always, it was good for me.  Tell me, was it good for you?

Totally Organic Talum Skirt, Greenloop, $29.99, Sz.8

Totally Organic Talum Skirt, Greenloop, $29.99, Sz.8

Any fashionista worth their debit card will tell you their favorite four letter word is “sale”. But never let it be said that we fashionistas are not without are ethics or values.

We recycle, drive hybrids or use car-sharing and public transportation, take reusable bags to go grocery shopping and buy eco-friendly products and clothing!  So if we can combine a sale with being ethically responsible?  Genius!

Greenloop, a fabulous eco-fashion site, is have a blowout sale, with all sale items under $30.  No, really.  Sizes and colors are really limited, but with luck you can snag an unreal deal.  I’ve pulled together my favorites for you, my favorite pr0n parsley.

Strike while the iron is hot, act now supplies are limited and lots of other phrases that mean do something really really soon. Seriously, my favorites keep selling out before I can even blog them.

.

Size 8’s should jump at the chance to pick up this Truly Organic Talum skirt which normally sells for $73.50.  It’s made out of 100% organic cotton twill with 100% natural dyes.

The skirt is lined in soft cotton poplin, and then they’ve added rouching and ties to the sides so you can play with the skirt and make it unique every time.  It’s shown here in wine, but selling in gray.  Wear this skirt three seasons out of the year.

Loomstate Hawkeye Jacket, Greenloop, $29.99

Loomstate Hawkeye Jacket, Greenloop, $29.99

Men who wear a size x-large, I’m calling your name!  If you don’t buy this Loomstate “Hawkeye” jacket (or chicks, if you don’t buy it for your guy), I will personally reach through this computer and smack you!

You’re getting a hooded, mid-weight anorak jacket that was originally $275, for $29.99.  If I felt like doing the math I would tell you that’s a very large percent off!

Here’s the low-down: easy, relaxed fit, drawstring at waist and hood, zip + snap front, four front snap flap pockets, removable, quilted inside vest, made from 82% organic cotton and 18% decycled polyester, “in China – with respect”.

This is one nice jacket.  So stop buying soy lattes for a couple of weeks and get yourself a fancy new jacket.  And then call your blogger – she’s single!

Loomstate Paracaribou T_Shirt, Greenloop $24.99, sz. small

Loomstate Paracaribou T_Shirt, Greenloop $24.99, sz. small

Loomstate also has a handful of really nice quality t-shirts for $19.99 – $24.99, including this organic cotton “Paracaribou” tee; they’re fair-trade compliant and made in Peru.

If you read my infrequent menswear posts, you know I’m a fan of nice t-shirts worn on their own, or layered.  I’d pick up a few of these, if not all, considering they normally sell for $60-65.

EcoSkin Alexandrite Dress, $29.99, Greenloop, Sz. L

EcoSkin Alexandrite Dress, $29.99, Greenloop, Sz. L

.

Lest you think eco-fashion is all about t-shirts and jackets, feast your eyes on EcoSkin’s Bamboo & Tencel “Alexandrite” dress.  Good luck finding another dress this fashion forward, this eco-friendly at this price.

“Alexandrite” definitely has a Greco-Roman feel with its one shoulder flutter sleeve, and diagonal bottom hem.  It ties on the side of the waist, and is fitted through the bust, with a looser drape on the bottom.

This dress is available as of this writing in a large. That’s unusual for this sale, which has a lot of smaller sizes left over; so if this makes your heart go pitter-pat (and it should when you hear it was originally $167), make with the clicky and go get it.  We’ll be here when you get back. :)

Sublet bamboo and organic cotton dress, Greenloop, $280

Sublet bamboo and organic cotton dress, Greenloop, $280

For the last product today, I’m going to tempt you into Greenloop’s regular priced items with a dress I simply can’t not show you!

I’m absolutely enamored with the styling of “Catherine”, made by Sublet in bamboo and organic cotton in the U.S.A.

Catherine has sweet, pleated tulip sleeves, a cross over v-neckline, pleated & gathered bodice, black tape side detail, with a full coverage back.  It comes in “Misty”, a dreamy lilac/grey.

Yes, it’s $280, but it can compete with any designer dress of that price point, and you’ll be a lot more comfortable, and a lot more satisfied with your purchase.

I know some of you out there spend that kind of money, why not spend it on this?  Sizes medium and large at the moment.

.
Pr0n stars, I really hope you’re able to scamper over to Greenloop before all the good sales are gone and get some for yourself.  If not, at least take a look around and see what’s over there.  There’s always another sale waiting around the bend.

Until next time, it was good for me.  Tell me, was it good for you?

Happy Pr0niversary Sales!

I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t show you this cream colored smocked cotton dress, with brown applique on it.  Usually I’m not a fan of gladiator sandals, but I love the styling here.  The dress is all cotton with cotton lining, sizes 14-32.

American Cotton Spandex Jersey Yoga Pant, $28

As I’ve mentioned before, even certain so-called “cruelty-free” companies are not especially forthcoming about their production, other than to say they’re not made in sweatshops.

Anyway, if you don’t mind their slightly unsavory ad campaigns, use code MISSYOU09 to take 20% off.

I’m a fan of their yoga/workout clothing, such as their cotton/spandex yoga pants. Like most of their clothing, they come in several different colors.  Like pink!

Tulle Cardigan with Ruffle
Tulle Cardigan with Ruffle

I think I’ve shown you one thing from Tulle before, but I definitely haven’t shown you anything from their men’s side, Cloth Logic.

Right now, everything from both sites’ Spring I collection is 40% off.  Tulle has adorable, feminine clothing with a retro feel, like this Cardigan with Ruffle.  It’s only $36.00 and goes up to an XL in colors Scarlet and Lagoon.

I have to warn you that I just looked at the size chart and they are tiny.  I almost think this has to be some sort of a misprint or it’s meant to be a Juniors line, or maybe it varies by article.  An XL appears to be a 4/6?  Do look carefully pr0n addicts.

.

Cloth Logic Zip Up Sweater

Selection is limited over at Cloth Logic, but I’m a fan of this Zip Up Sweater with striped sleeves for $54.  This doesn’t appear to have a size chart at all.  Check the return policy and buy with caution.

Robert Rodriguez Kimono Top, ShopBop $200.20

ShopBop is having a spring sale: “Buy now, Wear now”.   Neither the selection nor the prices inspired me, but I did find a few gems, including this fashion forward kimono top by Robert Rodriguez.

Kimono tops are a bit of a throwback to the ’80s, but trust me, there were worse trends back then.  This particular top comes in mild dahlia, and black charmeuse.  I’d really like to see this on someone.

A while back we talked about Sample Sales.  Today I’m going to show you all my favorite sites.  Most have brand “boutiques” that open for a few days.  They usually require an invitation from another member, so you tell two friends and she tells two friends and so on.

With some sites you get a credit for every friend who joins, with some for the first purchase they make, and with some – both.  Hi, I’m Dinsquared and I’m your friend. :)

For instance, at their Final Sale this $395 quilted Shoshanna shift could have been yours for $99.  No lie.

Until next time, it was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?

Michelle Obama Style: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly

Pron friends, I have seen the past few weeks in First Lady Fashion and I am not amused.  The Belt of Doom is back; actually every belt of doom is back, I’m seeing awful black pant…things, and jewelry that threatens to eat the entire country.  March had not been a kind month to Michelle Obama, my little pr0n pears and then…just when all hope was lost.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.

.

This month, Michelle Obama had the honor of being the first person ever to share the cover of O Magazine with Oprah Winfrey.

My first impression was that she looked fantastic.  Overall, that’s still true.  It’s a beautiful photograph of a beautiful woman, but there are really significant styling problems.

The colors together are gorgeous; vibrant coral and lemon yellow look great on the First Lady, and the whole thing just makes me feel happy all over.  The open neckline flatters her face.

The first problem is that awful belt that she wore when serving food to the homeless.  I’m sure the homeless had better things to worry about than her belt, but surely at O Magazine a very polite stylist could have guided her gently away from it.

It’s some sort of clear red wide plastic belt horror. “It came from the ’80s!!”  The rest of the problem is apparently the length of the cardigan.

What’s happening is that because the cardigan goes over her hips, it emphasizes rather than flatters or ignores.  In combination with the sweater, the belt chops her in the middle, making her look heavier .

But don’t take my word for it; see what the outfit could have looked like with a shorter sweater and no belt or with the belt, thanks to a great photoshop job by my friend LaynieLink, at my direction.  We make a good team.  Actually, with a shorter sweater and that coral dress, the belt…isn’t that bad.  Don’t hurt me.

Michelle Obama at Arlington National Cemetary

Mrs. Obama is wearing a variation on the same style here at Arlington National Cemetery.

I almost really like this outfit.  I love the layering of colors and fabrics that she’s using; the overall idea of this outfit is really very chic.

Can you spot the problem?  Once again her sweater is too long for her, and instead of hanging straight it’s pulling at the buttons.  That’s a sign of a poor fit.

No matter how cute those trendy “boyfriend” sweaters are, if it doesn’t fit over your hips, it doesn’t fit. There will be other sweaters.  Your blogger promises.

Michelle Obama at Ted Kennedy

Michelle Obama at Ted Kennedy

Here’s where things start to go terribly terribly wrong.  In this picture the President and First Lady are at Senator Ted Kennedy’s birthday party .

She appears to be wearing a piñata, combined with I don’t even know what for necklaces.  Here’s a closeup.

According to the First Lady’s Press Secretary, these are vintage pieces.  Lovies, sometimes “vintage” is just another word for “old”.

I like the dangly blue necklace as a piece by itself, but it doesn’t work with what she’s wearing (what would??).  The yellow thing. I…I’m speechless.  I have no idea.  I don’t know what it is, what it was, what it’s supposed to be.  My apologies to Senator Kennedy.

Michelle Obama at school

Michelle Obama at school

This week Mrs. Obama visited a school in one of the worst neighborhoods in Washington, DC to talk about growing up, and education, and First Daughters Malia and Sasha.

Can anyone tell me why she’s dressed like the Mother of the Bride Goes to a Funeral?  I just don’t get this outfit at all.

She’s wearing what may or may not be a pants suit.  The jacket looks like a raw silk, but the pants look like a smooth satin.  The whole thing looks like a fussy, too old, weird, ill-fitting mess.

Why is she wearing black in the daytime to a high school? What is that thing attacking her shoulder?  Why is she wearing tapered leg pants and why can’t she get cuter flats?

I care too much, I know.  It just kills me to see such a stunning woman take such strange fashion left turns.  *sigh* One day, my little pr0n pies.  One day people will listen to me.

Michelle Obama at Fort Bragg

Michelle Obama at Fort Bragg

The outfit Mrs. Obama wore to Fort Bragg in North Carolina is equally puzzling.

Again with the long cardigan/belt combination, black pants – possibly the same she wore to school? and a white button down shirt underneath.

There’s classic and then there’s boring.  I’m so bored I’m falling asleep (and not because it’s nearly midnight as I write this).  Why black??  Don’t our troops deserve to be cheered up?  How about brown?  Brown is a serious color, but it’s still a color.

Why not add a colorful necklace here?  Or a colorful belt (though I’m still not crazy about this belt phase she’s going through).  Her face is glowing and radiant; I can’t say the same for her outfit.

Honestly she looks like she’s going to sit shiva.  Or maybe it’s me.

.

I’m delighted to be able to end this post on a high note.  Today Mrs. Obama went to the ground-breaking of the new White House kitchen vegetable garden.  I could cry tears of joy.

Michelle Obama White House Kitchen Groundbreaking

Michelle Obama White House Vegetable Garden Groundbreaking

Mrs. Obama arrived in an oversized sweater/dress over a black turtleneck, and black leggings and paired with a black belt and black patent leather boots.

Here’s why it all works.  Without the belt, the sweater would look shapeless, keeping the outfit monochrome makes the whole thing long and lean, and overall it’s a a chic, relaxed style.  Personally I’d have exchanged the patent leather boots for a good pair of waterproof Wellies; this is DC in March we’re talking about after all, but no matter.

I’m giving this outfit an A. That’s right, this outfit takes the cake.  Well played, Mrs. Obama; our Shopping Pr0n hats are off to you.

.

That’s all for tonight my pr0n pecans.  More tomorrow!

Until then, it was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?

Digg!

Calvin Klein is known for femininity in simplicity and elegance; this buttery yellow “Kenney Gown” is classic Calvin Klein Colelction.  It’s a stretch silk (98% silk, 2% elastic; lining 100% silk) available in a size 6, made in Italy.

If you don’t understand what’s so special about this dress, look at the back.  This gown was originally $1790.00, and it’s available for $429.

If you have a special once-in-a-lifetime event coming up: a non-traditional wedding maybe?  A gallery opening?  Choose a once-in-a-lifetime gown like Kenney.

.
For a slightly more down to earth dress, consider this adorable mod “Pocket Pleat Shift Dress” by Milly.  By now you know I’ll show you Milly any chance I get; really this blog is all about me. ;)

Milly Pocket Pleat Shift Dress, $108

Milly Pocket Pleat Shift Dress, $108

The trick to getting really amazing deals is to be flexible; pick up this sleeveless shift for next fall and winter.  As of this writing, it’s still available in a large, which is probably about an 8/10.  Check the size chart, peanuts.

If you do invest in this dress, make sure you’re a person who can wear a natural waist (i.e. neither raised nor lowered).  Generally you should be pretty proportional to do this, particularly with your torso.

Your dear blogger probably couldn’t pull this off because she has a very long torso.  Short torsos should go for no waist, otherwise they’ll look cut in half.

(How do you know what you have? Do you wear one-piece bathing suits easily or do you find them too short/stop too low on the boobs.  If you wore a pair of higher rise jeans, would it just look unfortunate or would it stop under your boobs?  The former is long-waisted, the latter is short.)  Michelle Obama looks great in natural waistlines.

Check out the inverted (inside-out) pleat in front (kind of hard to see), it’s a detail that I’m seeing more of.  An inverted pleat should keep a skirt from looking too wide of boxy.  Pair this one it with a a pair of brightly colored tights and a grey cardigan.

Maloles - Party Pochette

Maloles - Party Pochette $79.20 (orig. $330)

The wonderful thing about handbags is that every size is yours!  Like this “Party Pochette” by Maloles.

A pochette is simply a pouch; Malole’s is bigger than it looks at 6″ x 11″.  Most clutches are much smaller and not terribly functional, unlike this one which has 4 interior sections, an interior zipper pocket, and a zipper pocket under the flap.

I prefer it in pink (I prefer everything in pink), but it comes in silver, too.

Leopoldo Giordano Folded Ornament Wedge, $130.8 (Orig. $545)

Leopoldo Giordano Folded Ornament Wedge, $130.8 (Orig. $545)

Shoes come in sizes, but they’re frequently seasonless!  I know I’ve shown you these divine blue wedges from Leopoldo Giordano before, way way back when in Sales Pr0n: Dying of the Flu Edition, but they’re even more on sale now!

Pancakes, these are $545 shoes for $130!  Please, won’t somebody think of the children and buy these shoes?  And if you do, send me pictures! (Shoppingpr0n@gmail.com)

These patent leather wedges have a tab detail at vamp, and a seam detail at the 4″ covered heel.  Made in Italy.

Your podiatrist will not approve, but who asked her?  Oh – these are still available while they last in Euro sizes 38 -40.5 (about 8 -9.5).

I know you won’t disappoint me.

Leopoldo Giordano Broken Top Line Pump, $116.40 (Orig. $485)

Leopoldo Giordano Broken Top Line Pump, $116.40 (Orig. $485)

Leopoldo (Mr. Giordano if you’re nasty) has also been kind enough to design for us what he calls “Broken Top Line Pumps” .

Regular pr0nsters know how much I adore details like this: the smallest style change that can turn a very nice pump into a sublime one.

Suede is kind of a cold-season fabric, but it’s not like anyone’s going to send the Fashion Police after you for wearing it past March.  It’s just a heavy fabric/cold season style generality.

Brown and black are still available sizes 36.5 and up, but not for long!

.
Since I’ve shown you two “out of season” fashions, I’ll make it up to you with one more “in-season” top.

Karta Printed V Sleeveless Top, $74.88 (Orig. $312)

Karta Printed V Sleeveless Top, $74.88 (Orig. $312)

Surely this is one of the most unique tops I’ve ever seen.  Karta’s  Print V Neck Sleeveless Top is a black and white woven v-neck floral (lined), with a faceted-resin appliqué daisy on one side.

I love the way bright colors are being used to contrast against black here.  The shirt is 25″ long, and on the model it stops just below her hips.

I feel like this top would be fun to wear to the Kentucky Derby with some retro pumps, a cute skirt and a big ol’ hat.

.
Our time is up for the moment, my lovelies.  I have one more post for you this evening: a product review. After that, hopefully I’ll be back on track.

By the way, Pr0nMom was supposed to go shopping for trouser jeans today, like the Lucky Brand ones I showed you in my most recent Outfit of the Day (erm – why didn’t you all tell me it said ‘Outfit of the Dayo’?).  We all know how awful buying jeans can be, so let’s wish her luck!

Until next time, it was good for me; tell me: was it good for you?
