Outfit of the Day: Totally Awesome ’80s Style

Sarah Jessica Parker and Amy Linker in Square Pegs

Sarah Jessica Parker and Amy Linker in Square Pegs

Like, welcome to the ’80s, my preppy pr0n pals.  Today’s post is going to be totally awesome.  I don’t know if you’ve heard, but the ’80s styles are back, and like, that’s a decade your blogger totally knows.

There are lots of different types of ’80s fashion; I mean there were the punks, and the Madonna wannabes – grody to the max – but the style I remember best is preppy.  Pr0nSis was a totally tubular dresser if you know what I mean.  She had The Preppy Handbook, and shopped at Talbots, which was like totally different back then.

So, like, put in your Beta tape of Square Pegs and pay attention – because before Sarah Jessica Parker was Carrie, she was Patty. And she was totally awesome.  Totally.

The start to any prep fashion worth its plaid is its polo shirt.  These are still easy to find, but there are three keys to properly wearing this retro style.

When buying a polo shirt, you want consider fit, color, and layering.  Polo styles should be fitted; I don’t want to see anything your mom would wear.  Colors should be bright and layering is encouraged – and always, always pop the collar.

Fitzwell LondonGreen Polo, $29 at Zappos

I chose pink and green polo shirts; two colors any prep would be proud to style: a Lily Pulitzer true pink, and a Fitzwell Polo in minty green, both from Zappos.

Lacoste Cotton V-neck Cable Knit Sweater, $71.99

Lacoste Cotton V-neck Cable Knit Sweater, $71.99

In this instance I’d prefer to see the pink on top, because the Lily Pulitzer is pique; pique is a plus for ’80s fashion.

Go even further by layering a cardigan or tennis sweater on top.  For the moment the style is that the sweater is going to go draped over your shoulders, tied in front.

I went with a classic v-neck cable neck sweater from Lacoste.  Cable knit is definitely a plus, and you could do an entire preppy wardrobe at Lacoste if you were careful.

.

From here preppy style can go a few ways: preferably either  a skirt or capris; whichever one you choose the theme is still about color and fit.

Lily Pulitzer Georgie Reversible Skirt, $71.20 @Preppy Outlet

Lily Pulitzer Georgie Reversible Skirt, $71.20 @Preppy Outlet

Skirts should be straight or have a bit of an a-line, wrap skirts are a plus; anything with small animals on it is a big plus.  This is preppy fashion: skirts are above the knee and then some. No micro minis, but maybe mid-thigh.

Lily Pulitzer has merely updated its style since the ’80s, making it a choice fashion brand to use.

The Georgie reversible wrap skirt changes from a light blue buttoned slightly sailor style, to a pale green with pink embroidered monkeys on it!  Monkeys!  This is preppy perfection and two skirts in one for $71.20.

.
Let’s talk capri pants.  Why wear capris?  You can wear a full length pant for ’80s preppy fashion, but I think when you see what’s next you’ll understand why you won’t want to.

Ralph Lauren Stretch Golf Pants, $125

Ralph Lauren Stretch Golf Pants, $125

To start, these aren’t just any capri pants.  ’80’s preppy pants are flat front, slim fit, brightly colored pants, frequently with a split hem.

With this particular outfit I could have turned down the volume slightly with the Resort Kiwi color, but I went full blast by using the Classic Lemon color of the Ralph Lauren Stretch Golf Pants.  If you’re going ’80’s preppy style, you can’t be afraid of color.

Tods Heaven Boatstitch Loafers, $316 at Bluefly

Shoes and bags are needed to accessorize our ’80s style preppy outfit.  A relatively wide variety of shoes can be adapted, so long as you follow two rules: color and flats.

Something as simple as a pair of Keds would work,  or you could choose a pair of brightly colored loafers like these Tod’s.

Kate Spade Green Maui Jelly Thongs, $28.99 @Bluefly

Kate Spade Green Maui Jelly Thongs, $28.99 @Bluefly

For summer, a pair of bright flat sandals will also work very well for this style.  Make sure the style isn’t overly modern: no gladiator sandals, and no metallics.

Think simple and bright, like these adorable Kate Spade Jellies.  Jellies are sooo ’80s style.

Bright white sandals would also work fine, but I can’t stress this enough when talking about ’80s preppy fashion: don’t be afraid of color.

.

For handbags, think about “conservative” brands and structured styles in bright colors; no hobos, or other slouchy styles.  Structured totes are best, or a conservative satchel.  Kate Spade, some Tory Burch, Coach.  I’ve shown some examples of do’s and dont’s below.

Ray Ban Wayfarers

Ray Ban Wayfarers

Preppy sunglasses are definitely different from what’s chic today; no oversized round plastic frames.  I have two words for you Ray-Ban Wayfarers.

If you don’t know what I mean, watch Tom Cruise in Risky Business.  If you haven’t seen Risky Business, you don’t understand the ’80s.

So, like there you go and stuff.  You’re totally preppy, and it’s all, like ’80s fashion style.

It was like, rad for me. Tell me, was it rad for you?

Handbag/Manbag Pr0n

Pr0n friends, I am one beat blogger.  But I always have energy for you, especially because I got to use my new toy for today’s post: Polyvore.com.  Using Polyvore means I get to show you lots more goodies, and who doesn’t like more goodies?  Today we’re going to talk about handbags and manbags: all colors, prices and styles.  Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Red Hobos

Red Hobos

Red Hobos – by dinsquared on Polyvore.com

This is a hobo*.  These are also hobos.  The hobo bag is a curious creature in the wild, in sizes ranging from just enough for a wallet, cell phone and keys, to “Excuse me, Ma’am.  Are you hiding an Olsen Twin in there?”

Hobos’ common thread is their slouchy appearance, which can also vary in degree of slouch.  The pro to a hobo bag is it’s comfy casualness.  It’s nearly always a shoulder bag, and comes in lots of variations.

The con to a hobo bag is that you risk looking like…a hobo.  Generally, the more structured a bag, the more “formal” its appearance is; the less structured, the more casual.

The other downside is that you wind up kind of throwing everything into one big smooshy lump.  Good luck finding anything in there.  Even an Olsen Twin.

All details and links are at the Polyvore link, but quickly starting in the middle and then going clockwise:

1) Kate Spade Northampton Charlie: $235.85 at Couture.Zappos.com; 2) Thugs and Kisses Oversized Hobo, $175 at LunaBoston.com; 3) Phoebe Canvas Tote, $19.80 at Forever21.com; 4) (bottom)Rebecca Minkoff red patent leather ‘Mini Nikki’ shoulder bag at Bluefly, $345; 5)Rebecca Minkoff Nikki Hobo Bag – Persimmons, $600 at TheHipChick.com; (top left); 6)  AE Large Textured Hobo, $39.50 at AE.com.

Men's Messenger Bags

Men's Messenger Bags - Manbags, baby

Men’s Messenger Bags – by dinsquared on Polyvore.com

Folks, men have stuff just like women. They need to carry their stuff places, just like women.  Isn’t it time for a little bag equality among the sexes?

I’m proposing the Bag Equality Act of 2009, whereby all men making under $250,000/year will be given a Man Bag – free!

Until my movement gains momentum however, I urge all men to invest in one with their own funds.  Few things say “I’m a grown-up” like a nice bag.

Many of them come big enough for your laptop,  they come in all fabrics and styles, and you can collect them for all occasions: work, weekend, dinner – you decide!

Again, complete details available by making with the clicky, but starting with our friend the gray man, and this time going counter-clockwise (humor me): 1) Marc by Marc Jacobs Textured Patent Zip Messenger Bag, $219.99 at Bluefly.com; 2) Mark Nason Messenger Bag, $625 at EBags.com; 3) Ben Sherman Commuter Bag, $79.00 at Tobi.com; 4)Jack Spade Greene Street Canvas Nylon Field Bag, $154 at Zappos.com.

I saved this red bag for last on purpose.  I love this bag so much, because it’s actually a daddy diaper bag! Check out the link for all the information on this DadGear Courier Retro Stripe Bag, there’s plenty of it.  I found it for $59.95 at Bagsbuy.com, and it also comes in blue, green and orange. ♥

Bowler Bags

Colored Bowlers

Bowler Bags – by dinsquared on Polyvore.com

Bowler Bags (named because of their similarity to actual bowling bags) are very trendy right now, and for the last few years.  It’s a fairly classic shape, so I’m expecting this style to stick around.  Remember the divine white bowler I showed you in Clearance Pr0n?

Generally a bowler is going to be a medium to large bag; they’re maybe 60% handbags bags, and 40% shoulder bags.  They frequently have shorter “drops”, but may look deceivingly long, so be sure to try them on.

Bowlers are also usually much wider at the bottom than at the top, making the bag somewhat bulky where it hits around your hip if you’re wearing it on your shoulder.  I’m not discouraging you from a bowler – I adore bowlers.  I’m just passing on my shopping pr0n knowledge. :)

Aren’t these bags adorable though?  It kind of makes you want one in every color.  Or maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, details at the Polyvore link; starting with the model and going clockwise: 1) Hayden-Harnett Trophy Bag in Blueberry, $678 at Haydenharnett.com; 2) Latico Leathers Candy Strip Bowler, $150.35 at ebags.com; 3) Vangi Front Pockets Grained Leather Bowler Bag, $261.71 at Forzieri.com; 4) Uptown Girl Bag by Big Buddha, $66 at Fredala.com; 5) Vera Bradley Black Microfiber Pleated Bowler, $50 at VeraBradley.com.

Spring Green

Green Totes and Satchels

Spring Green – by dinsquared on Polyvore.com

Don’t tell the other sets, but this one’s really my favorite; it just came out so pretty with all the springy green bags, don’t you think?

This set is about smallish structured bags; as shoulder bags,  they may be called “satchels”; as handbags they may be called  “totes”.  I call them pr0n.

Advantages: these are structured bags that can go from work to weekend, and things will more or less stay where you put them.  They may have an inner pocket or pouch or two or four, and they frequently have a space just for your cell phone!  They may be expandable, or have an outer pocket, and they’re just ubiquitous and classic.

A tote or satchel will never go out of style, you can always find it with the latest color or trend (buckles, zippers), and they’re easy to find in every price range.  If you’re stranded on a desert island and can only bring one handbag (quélle horror!) , bring your satchel or tote.

I love all of these; I want to bring them all home with me, and I don’t usually like green!  Starting with our fine headless model and going clockwise: 1) Chloe Ande Small Expandable Canvas Tote, $1375 at Net-a-Porter.com; 2) Cole-Haan Small Village Box Tote, $170.82 at 6pm.com; 3) Merona Green Tote, $17.99 at Target; 4) Michael Kors Push Lock Shoulder Satchel, $378 at MichaelKors.com; 5) Kate Spade Noel Small Coal Tote (Green), $123.55 at Zappos.com; 5) Olivia Harris – Grey and Green Leather Tubular Satchel Tote, $495 at ShopKitson.com, and finally – 6) Tory Burch Patent Burch Tote, $395 at saksfifthavenue.com.

So there we are.  I’ll be using Polyvore more in the future to show you how to put together outfits, or examples within a category or just because I’m bored and you’re a semi-captive audience. :D Really, thanks for being here, poppies.

Over the weekend, I’ll be doing a post on…something.  But Monday is always the latest edition of Pr0n Plus!

As always, it was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?

A couple quick notes my pr0n popsicles: *a hobo is  a term that’s not really used any more because it’s actually a homeless person.  Homelessness is a serious issue; please don’t throw things at me because I made a joke.
A huge pr0n shoutout (sh0ut0ut?) goes to thefind.com, which is this amazing website where you tell it what kind of product you’re looking for, and you can narrow it down by color and/or price and/or store if you want, and it pulls from more sites than you could possibly find in a lifetime.  There’s also like.com, but I find that I like thefind better.  (Get it? Yeah…Sorry.)

Kate Spade Pr0n

Good Morning my lovely pr0n friends,

It’s far far to early in the morning my time to be writing a post; in fact I’ve been busy gathering posts for a post later tonight. But I received an email this morning saying that the venerable brand Kate Spade was having a blowout sale (and omg – it’s snowing!). After checking it out, I would be failing you as a blogger if I didn’t bring some of these pretties to your attention.

.

Of the handbags, I think this “savona paige” in watermelon or lime is quite the catch. (Okay, I don’t know that those are the color names, I made that up.)

It’s a narrow, over-the-shoulder hobo style in cowhide leather. Zipper closure, interior double slide pockets and zip pocket. 10.2″ drop length – this puppy will fit over your shoulder.

Let’s talk price: originally $375, on sale for $188 – plus take another 20% off (discount will show at checkout). That’s a grant total of $150.40 for a leather Kate Spade.

Shopping Pr0nistas, now is the time to remember the Second Rule of Shopping Pr0n: Get it while it lasts, supplies are limited, first come first served.

Go! Now! I’ll wait…

Got one in your shopping cart? Good. Moving on.

.

If you’re good with heels, I implore you to pickup a pair of these kelley spectator pumps.

These are 3″ patent leather pumps made in Italy. While they still have an array of sizes most of them are limited to this magnificent mustard color. Larger sizes also have forest green and purple. Put these puppies on your feet and feel like a pr0n star!

Kelley was originally $328, marked down to $164, and at checkout you’ll receive an extra 20% off, making your final price $131.20. Unbelievable. Run. Don’t walk. Do not pass go – do collect $200 for these shoes; you’ll have money in your pocket to spare.

.

Our next category is accessories – wallets and the like. I happen to loooove Kate Spade wallets. It’s just a thing.

Feast your eyes on this knightsbridge travel wallet in caramel, and pop clinton street taryn.

Okay , in order – the travel wallet holds all your essentials: passport, credit cards, plane ticket, itinerary. Six credit card slots, 3 zipper pockets and 3 slide pockets (and partridge in a pear tree).

It’s embossed patent cowhide. (Sorry, Bessie.)  Was $225, sale price $113 – take an extra 20% off to make your price $90.40. Outstanding.

The pop clinton street taryn is too cute for words. Your dear blogger loves color if you can’t tell. The stats are these: oxford nylon trimmed in mirrored finish metallic leather, classic french purse with 4 credit card slots, ID picture slot and coin compartment. And the color is so cute!!! (I wrote that part) $125, marked down to $94 – 20% off, for your price of $75.20! Whee!

.

.I can’t say I’m much of a fan of their apparel, but they do have this adorable red and pink lambswool hat.

“alpine norweigian cap”, originally $85, sale price $43, final price $34.40! Buy one for me, too ‘k?  Oh, it comes in white. Again, if you’re one of those people that can keep white clean for longer than the length of time it takes to get it out of the box (not me).

.

There’s a small selection of jewelry, none of which impresses your blogger. Stay tuned for (hopefully) tonight’s post. I’ve got jewelry out the yin-yang.

.

If you’re in the market for an upscale baby bag that doesn’t look like one, you could do worse than this lenox hill noel gabel. The “Dot Noel” is Kate Spade’s signature, like Coach’s c’s or Gucci’s G’s or what have you.

So – this zip around backpack is quilted polyester nylon with cowhide trim (can we have a moment of silence for Bessie?), 2 exterior bottle pockets,  interior zipper pocket and double slide pockets.

The lining is wipeable and waterproof, and a waterproof changing pad is included. Hey – can’t beat that with a stick.  Aaaand adjustable shoulder straps. Sounds nice, actually. I’d buy it if I had a kid.

The low down: original price is a mind numbing $425, sale price a hefty $225, your price (just because I like you) : $180. Not shabby.

.

.There’s some cute stationery if you’re in need, and some Christmas ornaments if you need your tree to be as well dressed as you are (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Check it out.

.

Last, but certainly not least, if you’re in the market for some divine luggage and have some money to blow, feast your eyes on this degaulle check in.

Emerald patent leather and pvc blend, too large to carry on (so you’re sucking up another $25 every time you fly) in-line skate wheels, telescoping handle, exterior zipper pocket, separate compartment with garment sleeve, lingerie bag, and elasic tie down straps.

Here’s how it’s going to go down: originally $695, sale price $398, final price $318.40. Can you get luggage for less? Sure. Is it outrageous for a good piece of luggage? No.

Take that for what it’s worth.

.

There’s lots more to see at Katespade.com my little pr0n0s. Do have a gander.

Until I see you again – it was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?
