Dating Fashion: Menswear in the New Millennium

It’s so good to see you again, my darling pr0n pals.  I apologize for the prolonged absence; it was unexpected, and I’ve longed to get back to you.  Here’s what’s inspired me today: last night I met up with a gentleman caller of whom I’m fond, but have not seen in quite some time.

They say you’re only as young as you feel, and while that’s true, it’s been a few years since either of us saw 30.  My gentleman caller, who is a handsome fellow, showed up wearing an Old Navy Polo, cargo shorts, and casual shoes.  It’s not the worst style that your blogger’s ever seen, but not the best, either.

In my caller’s defense, he confessed that he did not know how to dress; this is an affliction from which many a young man suffers: Fashion Challenged.  In today’s post, I’m going to answer the question:  how does one dress these days when one is courting a young lady of the new millennium?

.

Sometimes I think fashion is so simple, I wonder how so many get it wrong.  But I recognize that the basics are shown, it can become second nature for all.  I’ve done a man’s semi-casual outfit once before, for Sunday brunch; the date outfit is not so different from the brunch outfit.

We’ve got the usual April heat wave here in DC, where it goes from 50 to nearly 90 inside of a week.  I know your dear blogger was caught off guard, and thanked her lucky stars her summer wardrobe was machine washable.  So for our first option, let’s cut our gentleman caller some slack and show him how to properly wear shorts when drinking with a lady.

Saturday Night Date - Option 1

Here are two different flat front shorts: khaki if you’re a little bit country; plaid, if you’re a little bit rock and roll.  My gentleman caller told me he shops at Old Navy, so I found these at Old Navy’s grown-up siblings: Banana Republic and J. Crew.

On top, I like to style a button down shirt, with a tee underneath; I’m a bit old-fashioned that way.

You can stay on the safe side with a solid color long sleeve – just zhoozh bit, in the words of Carson Kressley.  You don’t have to be so tucked in, and you can roll the sleeves up haphazardly; you’re learning how to dress up casual wear, and dress down work wear.

Women know the dirty little secret of fashion is that you spend time to look fantastic, so you look as if it’s taken you no time at all to look that way.

Don’t be afraid to try something a little different and show some personality.  Put a clean, well-maintained, logo t-shirt in a different color underneath the button down; humor is fine within reason.  Just make sure you are positive about your lady friend’s sense of humor.  Or try a micro-plaid or stripe with your plaid shorts.  The general rule for mixing patterns is one big, one little; one big plaid, one little plaid.

Few subjects in the fashion world are as controversial as the “mandal”: the man’s sandal.  Is it a do or a don’t?  In this blogger’s opinion, the problem lies not with the poor, maligned mandal, but with the feet that possess them!

Men, it’s time for your first pedicure.  Not only is it incredibly relaxing, and pleasurable, but it makes your feet look good.  Again, women’s dirty little secret is, that our tootsies don’t look this way just because of an extra X chromosome, we pay.  As should you, if your feet plan to see the light of day after March.

If I hear even one of you asking me about flip-flops, there’s no telling what I’ll do!  Flip-flops are for the beach.  When you are not on the beach you will wear a shoe.  *breathes in*  It’s okay, I’m alright, I’m not going to hurt anyone.  Yet.

.
Let’s move on to long pants, which can be known as “khakis”, even when not khaki colored.  Their proper name is of course “chinos”, but lots of things which are proper will get you looked at strangely.

Saturday Night - Option 2

Observant pr0n prawns (hehehe) will note that while I put a long sleeve shirt with a short, I’ve put a short sleeve shirt with a long pant.

Of course there will be situations where both of one or the other will be necessary, depending on the weather, but playing with proportion adds interest to an outfit.

Men should not fall into the trap of buying clothing that is too big; check that your shoulder seams are actually at your shoulders.  The shirt can be a bit loose or trim, depending on the particular style – try a slimmer cut shirt if you’re a trim fellow.  It won’t make you look bigger, but buying bigger will make you look smaller.

There’s nothing necessarily wrong with a casual shoe, but it depends on the shoe.  A plain sneaker or athletic type shoe does not tell your lady guest that you have put thought into your appearance.

Puma Green Leather 'Scarred Street Low' Sneaker, $111.34 at Bluefly

Puma Green Leather 'Scarred Street Low' Sneaker, $111.34 at Bluefly

A sneaker with some color and style, paired with a solid or patterned top (choose one color from the shirt for your shoes), says that you are a gentleman of some distinct joie de vivre or je ne sais quoi, and what lady would not want that?  Of course, leather is always appropriate, and a simple driving moccasin is simple, classic, and comfortable.

.
A simple wardrobe of easy to mix and match pieces is what everyone should strive for. When meeting a member of the other gender, one wants to make a good impression – but perhaps not too good.  One should look attractive, color coordinated, neat, and just a smidge dressed up.  Let your clothing tell your lady friend that you have been looking forward to your outing together.

.
In my next post, we’ll talk about ladies, and what to wear when their gentleman comes calling.

As always, it was good for me. Tell me; was it good for you?

Related Pr0n: I Won on Polyvore!

We interrupt this shopping blog for a very special announcement: I WON!  From time to time you’ve seen me use this really nifty website Polyvore to show you lots of products at once, or an entire outfit altogether.  Polyvore lets you snatch bits o’ the web and put them together along with bits o’  the web that everyone else has snatched.

For instance, I used it when showing you How to Dress for Your Body Type  if you’re a pear shape; I used it when we were talking about Stretching Your Closet , to show you the outfit I’d pulled together from my own closet, and again when I was asking for your help the the very same dress in Dress this Mess.  I even managed to eek out a couple of men’s outfits when talking about Sample Sales and Sunday Brunch Outfits, and to show you how to (properly) dress like Michelle Obama. Oh, heck.  Just click the Polyvore tag and go wild!

.

But aside from being a really helpful tool for bloggers, it’s just a lot of fun, and lets you express your artistic or fashion skillz in a different way.

>
Just today your dear blogger WON a contest!  Through the Bloggers on Polyvore group, my set took first prize in the “Submit Your Best Set” contest.  here it is:

.

Yay! I’m really proud of my little set, but I can’t overlook some of my other favorites, too:

So if you’ve ever wondered what could possibly drag your dear blogger away from you, my favorite little pr0n pomegranates – it’s this… I’m playing with all my sets in Polvore.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Shopping Pr0n, with Pr0n Plus: the very best in plus size fashion, hopefully coming tonight.

Until then: it was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?

Outfit of the Day: Stretching Your Closet

Pr0nstars, often the best way to stretch your closet is by experimenting a little.  Remember when you were little and played dress up?  Take some time to pull things out of your closet, put them together in new and scary ways and take pictures.  See what works.

Monday I had a fancy work conference to attend; not only were my suit pants in need of dry cleaning, but they’re in need of me losing this winter weight. :p  Which was how I created my Outfit of the Day.

The best outfits come from experimentation

The best outfits come from experimentation

Here are the pieces that I worked with.  I started with my new Marc by Marc Jacobs dress, bought on sale at Cusp.  My normal instinct would be to put a cardigan over a dress, so I didn’t do that.  Instead, I pulled out my charcoal gray wool crepe suit jacket from J. Crew

Outfit of the Day: Conference

A suit jacket in a neutral color can go with almost anything: pants, jeans, a skirt and even a dress apparently.  I tried it because I knew the colors would work well together (pink and gray were so ’80s), and the suit jacket was fitted.  A boxy suit jacket would have overwhelmed the dress.

I’ve been all about grey tights; they’re more fun than black, but don’t take you too far outside your comfort zone.  These tights were more of a dove grey; I stayed in the same color family, just mixed shades.  For instance, I could have put a bright pink cardigan over the light pink dress.

The shoes are Nordstrom’s Biala brand, and are actually a burgundy patent leather, but I couldn’t get a picture of that.  Again, red/pink is in the same color family. The bag is my cheery new post-conference treat: a Dooney Bourke , which was 30% off.

.

I have to share with you the story of this Laundry trench coat.  If you’re a regular pr0n addict, you know I’ve been searching high and low for a new spring coat; I haven’t had once since I lost a bunch of weight.  I’d looked everywhere online and hadn’t found anything I like.

Laundry Trench Coat

So this past weekend, Pr0nMom and I went to our local Giga-Mall.  Out of default we started at Bloomingdales.  Pickings were slim, but I spotted two trenches; one was white, and you know I am not the type of person to buy white things; the other was this one.

I tried it on, and Pr0n Mom and I both laughed, because it was perfect and completely in budget.  When does that ever happen? Anyway, that’s the story of my new coat.

Finally, since I wanted to keep the outfit from looking too conservative, I put on my chunky double-strand necklace from Banana Republic, bought a few months ago.

The necklace didn’t cost more than $40 or $50 and it’s been a great investment since it goes with everything.

Conference Cutie?

Conference Cutie?

I hope you’ll agree that this turned out to be a chic, fun way to look professional, but show a lot of personality.

Plus I didn’t buy anything specifically for this occasion.  Everything that I wore here I’ve already worn lots of times, or I expect to wear lots of times.

.

Any questions before class is dismissed?

Thanks for reading, my little  salmonella contaminated pr0n pistachios.

It was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?

Digg!

Outfit of the Day: Dress Me!

Outfit of the Day is back, my little pr0n peppermint, and I need your help! Even fashionistas get the blues.  I’m going to show you two pieces that I’ve just bought and you’re going to help me put together an outfit with them.  It’ll be fun!  Just like those Choose Your Own Adventure Books we used to read.  So put on your best thinking caps and dress this mess!

.

Me and My Marc Jacobs

Me and My Marc Jacobs

The parameters are this: I just bought this Marc by Marc Jacobs dress on sale at Cusp.

(Yes, Cusp! They can’t throw me out anymore!).  I feel the need to explain that it has to be taken in a little on top.

Anyway.  Me, dress, sale.  Yay!  It’s a cotton faille – sort of ribbed; the zipper is meant to be exposed and the hemline is a wide band of fabric.  It’s my first Marc by Marc Jacobs and my first Cusp purchase.  *snif*  I’m so proud.

Then this Dooney & Bourke handbag I’d been eying went on sale. The chocolate brown disappeared, and this bright yellow appeared.

Yellow Medium Chiara at Dooney Bourke

Yellow is scary!  But I’ll have it today and know whether or not it works.

Betsy + Iya Asymmetrical Copper Necklace

Betsy + Iya Asymmetrical Copper Necklace

The third thing that I’ll have is my asymmetrical copper necklace that I bought from Betsy + Iya.

So, keeping all that in mind, here is your mission, should you choose to accept it.

Dress this Mess

Dress this mess!

Give me your fashion guidance, my pr0n addicts!  I have the dress, the bag (unless I hate it), the pink cardigan and the sunglasses (a steal at Loehmann’s).  The rest are ideas: Do I mix yellows?  Will a jacket look better than a cardigan?  Am I completely off my rocker mixing a pale dress with a bright bag? Should I mix pinks, not yellows?  A little help here!

The two Moschino pumps on the right are scrumptious, but at $600 /pair they’re a not so much. Have you seen anything similar?  Seen anything different? What do you like? No slingbacks or heels over 3.5″, please.

The  brown Bettye Mueller pair I lurrrrrrve, but they’re a final sale!  And with my fussy feet that’s just asking for trouble.  I’m trying to stretch my fashion wings this season, so don’t be afraid to show me something totally off the wall.  I’m open to ideas.  I want participation!

Help me, Obi Wan Pr0n Stars! You’re my only hope!

I’m off to a meeting, then home.  When I return, I expect opinions, links, pretty pictures, diagrams, photoshops, etc. etc. etc.  Don’t let me down!

I’ll post pictures of the outfit as it takes shape.

Until then, it was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?

Outfit of the Day Pr0n: Casual Dayo

Hi pronsters! Today’s Outfit Pr0n is all about being casual. Whether it’s casual Friday at work, driving the kids to and fro, or spending time with friends on the weekend, being comfortable, casual and chic is all about choosing pieces that are machine washable, fit well, and don’t require much effort.

.

The cornerstone of any casual outfit a pair of nice jean!  I’m going to let you in on a little secret pr0n stars: I never pay full price for jeans anymore.  There is no reason why you should.  None.

Lucky Brand Madison Trouser Jean $70

Lucky Brand Madison Trouser Jean $70

Jeans are so ridiculously over-priced!  $1-200 for some nice denim?  No way!  As with all good things, patience and persistence is required, but the outcome is worth it.

Shopping online for jeans can be difficult, unless you’re familiar with the brand.  If you have a Marshalls or TJ Maxx or Loehmann’s or Filene’s Basement near you, they will have drastically reduced prices on the top name designer jeans.  Smaller sizes are easier to find; anything 30 and above (8-10) may take work.

I picked a pair of Madison Trouser Jeans from Lucky Brand.  A straight trouser leg will balance hips and thighs, and a dark rinse usually lighter weight cotton makes your jeans slightly dressier.

Lucky Brand is nice because they’re usually not as over-priced as other designer jeans, they’re cut “true to size” meaning a 10 is going to fit like a 10, not an 8 or 6, and they sell up a 14 or 16 in most styles, including this one.
.
.
On top, try pieces that are easily layered; tops that could go under a sweater one day or under a jacket the next; with jeans and a hoodie one day, khakis and a trench coat another.  Just because you’re going casual, doesn’t mean you should look messy or dumpy.
.
J. Crew Perfect Fit Long Sleeve T: $19.50

J. Crew Perfect Fit Long Sleeve T: $19.50

A long sleeve t-shirt will go miles in your closet.  This is the perfect fit long sleeve tee from J. Crew.  It’s $19.50; there are other styles with more detail for just a little more.

My one problem with J. Crew is their outrageous shipping prices.  They frequently send out free shipping codes for orders over a certain amount, so why not combine orders with your friends?

.

If you’re chasing the kids, layer it under a light sweater, like this v-neck perfect sweater from Martin & Osa.  Putting something under it will do

Martin + Osa Perfect V-Neck Sweater $49.50

Martin + Osa Perfect V-Neck Sweater $49.50

.several things: add interest, add warmth, and weight/structure, and add options!  A few sweaters + a few t-shirts + some accessories = several different outfits.

.

For casual Friday at work, try it under a shorter jacket, like this adorable Piped Swing Jacket at Tulle.  I need to give a shout-out to TheFashionableHousewife, who featured Tulle in their very lovely blog.

Piped Swing Jacket at Tulle, $42.50

I love layering short over long.  It’s a way to play with proportion while still covering everything comfortably.

Or, do it the other way.  Wear the sweater to work, and the cute jacket with the kids.  Make the other moms jealous!

.

Don’t let me catch you in sneakers, my little pr0n plums.  You can do a flat as easy as you can do a pair of Keds; save the sneaks for the playground.

Ecco Boullion Ballerina, $83.77 at Endless.com

Ecco Boullion Ballerina, $83.77 at Endless.com

If I’ve learned anything, it’s that good shoes are an investment.

You only get one pair of feet, and they affect your ankles, knees, hips and back.  If you scrimp everywhere else, splurge here.

These are the Ecco flats I own in red patent leather.  I have fussy feet and these are possibly the most comfortable, supportive shoes I’ve ever had.

As soon as I get paid, I’m buying them in these greyish purpleish patent since they’re on sale.

.

.
You’re never fully dressed without a smile.  But beyond that without coat and a handbag.  This Kenneth Cole A-Line Topper is a great deal at $98.  Finish the entire outfit with Tano’s Found at Last shoulder bag.  It’s on sale at Luna Boston for $135 in red, green and black.  Limited quantities!

Pr0n Plus: Spring Basics Edition

La Canadienne Stella, $225.68

La Canadienne Stella, $225.68 at Zappos

Happy Spring, Northern Hemisphere!  I’m afraid this blog is a bit Northern-Hemisphere-centric.  I’m a day late with this week’s Pr0n Plus, but I think it’s a good one.  In today’s Shopping Pr0n, we’re going to look at spring wardrobe basics.

I’ll be showing plus size styles, but these are items which should and can go in anyone’s closet: a spring coat, a cotton shirt, pants, sweater, a day dress, and some cute comfy shoes.

.

The first thing everyone needs for spring is a raincoat.  You can sing “Rain rain go away” to your heart’s content, but it doesn’t seem to do much good.

Standing Collar Trench, $54.99 at Target

Standing Collar Trench, $54.99 at Target

Pears/Hourglasses and apples have different needs for coats.  (How do you know if you’re a pear or an apple?  Do you have a defined waist?  No?  You’re an apple.

Do you have Bette Davis eyes thighs?  You’re a pear.) When buying coats, a pear actually doesn’t necessarily want to define a waist.

Look at this classic belted trenchcoat from Target.  Yes, Target.  For a pear or hourglass is that once you cinch the belt, it over-emphasizes what’s happening down below, and you look lumpy and heavier than you are.

For an apple, this helps define what you don’t have much of.  Since there’s less inch difference beween chest, waist and butt, the belt will emphasize, not over-emphasize.

.
.
Pears (for the rest of this post, just extend pear advice to hourglasses), try something like this fun “Rainy Day Mac” from Boden.

Rainy Day Mac, $138 at Boden

Rainy Day Mac, $138 at Boden

Don’t worry about your waist – it’s not going anywhere.  The key is to deemphasize the “booty area” (it’s a technical term).

.
By wearing something that doesn’t chop you off in the middle, you look sleek and svelte.  Boden goes up to a UK size 20 (US 18ish), and they have this style in a few other patterns.

.
What I love about Boden’s website is that they show you how much stock they have left for each color and size.
.
..
.
Working from the outside in, you’re going to want a day dress: something you can dress up for work, and dress down on the weekend.  I love this tie-back dress from Donna Ricco.
.
Donna Ricco Tie Back Dress, $168

Donna Ricco Tie Back Dress, $168

Big prints are great for plus-sizes; it’s a matter of proportion.  Also, this type of tie-back, or similar wrap-dress is going to flatter lots of body types.

.
Not everyone has a small waist, but the smallest part of every woman’s body is almost always under her bust.  Add an adjustable top to an empire waist and it’s genius.
.
Remember that you can always put a cami on underneath if there’s too much boobage (also a technical term).
..
..

Every woman must must must (must) have in her closet a simple button down shirt, a pair of casual pants, and a colorful cardigan.

Gap Dobby Striped Roll-Up Shirt, $48

Gap Dobby Striped Roll-Up Shirt, $48

These three pieces can be mixed and matched with nearly everything else in your closet, will never go out of fashion, and can be bought nearly anywhere to suit your individual style.

Simply Be Combat Pants, 32p

Simply Be Combat Pants, 32p

I’ve chosen a white cotton roll-up shirt from the Gap, a pair of pants from Simply Be, and a cardigan from Pink Marzipan.

The Gap has practically made its name on basics like this; their XXL is a size 18 or 20.  J. Crew goes up to a 16 on many products, as does Banana Republic.

PAS Knitted Cardigan In China Blue- Poro, 64p

PAS Knitted Cardigan In China Blue- Poro, 64p

For a lower price point, try Macy’s or Target or H&M.  Oh!  This summer (I think), Forever21 is coming out with a plus size line.  Yay!  Hopefully it will be the same kind of “knock-off trendy” as the original.

One point about this style of cardigan/sweater: it has the potential to be very cute on both apples and pears, but pears have to be careful.

If it doesn’t look right, it’ll wind up making you look pregnant.  If it does look right, it’ll look cute and flowy.  I’m a pear and I bought similar a few weeks ago, but the style rarely works on me.

.
It is my sincere belief that every woman should own at least one pair of red shoes.  These Vaneli flats are very similar to a pair of Eccos I splurged on and have never regretted.

Vaneli Indo Flat, $54.97 at Endless

Vaneli Indo Flat, $54.97 at Endless

They’ve got a slight heel (much better for you than plain flats), and cushy, flexible rubber soles.  You’ll get compliments on them nearly every time you wear them.  Dinsquared guaranteed.

These puppies are on clearance for $54 and change at Endless. com, and they’re still available in lots  of narrow and wide sizes up to a 10.

You need a pair of shoes that aren’t sneakers that are still comfortable to walk around in: to a friend’s house, to lunch, to the mall.  I can wear my Eccos for hours.; these Vaneli’s look pretty comfy, too.

Jimmy Choo "Clue" at Nordstrom

Jimmy Choo "Clue" at Nordstrom

By the way, did you know that Jimmy Choo’s go up to a size 11.5/12?  I certainly didn’t.
.
Jimmy Choo’s really don’t have anything specific to do with spring, but they’re fabulous and come in a large size, so I’m showing them to you.  Aren’t they fabulous?
..

That’s all the time we have together today my little pr0n popcorn.  I have more post ideas than I have time to do them all.

.

I hope to bring you a post on women’s suits, a series dressing for your body type, a series on how to make a wardrobe out of your closet, a post on coats…oy!  Please stay with me, won’t you?

Outfit of the Day Pr0n: Sunday Brunch

Happy Friday, pr0n friends.  If you’re not reading this on Friday, I’m sorry.  I’m starting a new (somewhat) daily column I’m calling Outfit of the Day Pr0n!  Exciting name, no?  Each day or thereabouts I’ll show you how to put together an outfit for a particular style, occasion or body type.

Rebecca Beeson Bright Red Empire Waist Tunic at Bluefly

Rebecca Beeson Bright Red Empire Waist Tunic at Bluefly

I wanted to start with a style that’s easy to do, easy to work off of, and both men and women can wear.  So rather than reinvent the wheel, I pulled this tomato red cotton v-neck tunic from Rebecca Beeson that I used for spring colors in Color Pr0n.

This outfit is “nice casual”.  For me, it’s something to wear out to a Sunday Brunch, or a cool summer evening party on a patio.  Wear it someplace you want to look nice…but not too nice?

Sunday Brunch

I’ve taken the tunic and almost made a casual suit out of it.  I chose a pair houndstooth cuffed capris by Guess?, but you could also put them over a pair of long chino shorts, like these at J. Crew that go up to a size 16.  Over the top and pants I put a one button black suit jacket from Banana Republic’s Monogram Collection.  I’m normally hesitant to recommend one-button jackets, because they’re a harder style to pull off, but this is a nice fit as long as you’re not very busty.  This particular blazer has had a slightly relaxed, slouchy feel that I wanted so it would line up over the tunic and make it dressier, but still keep the whole thing somewhat casual.  You don’t want a really slim fitting or structured jacket here, unless you’ve got an equally structured top.

Next I chose Cocobelle Paloma flat sandals from Endless.com, which have some style and structure (No flip flops! Ever!).  You can see that I’m walking that line between casual and structured in each piece, and that’s kind of the trick.  Pick your occasion, decide how dressy or casual you need to be and go from there.  Exchange the sandals for a pair of flats, the capris for a pair of dark trouser jeans, or the suit jacket for a casual blazer and the outfit will have an entirely different style and feel.  What’s great is that these are mostly types of items you’d have in your closet anyway; you’re just using them in a new way.  Aren’t you clever!

.

It’s hard to find really nice, unique men’s clothes.  I’ve been trolling some new blog friends so I hope to bring you more soon. Today’s outfit though, is one that men can totally wear, too.  Not androgynous, just adaptable. :)

A Men's Casual Primer

I’m so ridiculously pleased with how this turned out.  I took the women’s suit idea and used a men’s “geek chic” style.  Take a look at the jacket and shorts; they’re both patterns; the shorts are a tiny navy stripe from old faithful Banana Republic.  Since the shorts are a small stripe, and the blazer from Ben Sherman is a large check, you can mix the patterns.  When mixing patterns, keep use one large and one small, and stick to similar colors.

From there the rest was simple; I loved the pop of bright used in the Ben Sherman picture, so I found a cotton poplin button down shirt in Olive Butter from Old Navy.  The subject of a man-sandal, ie. a “mandal” is still controversial in the fashion world.  Unlike women, most men don’t go out of their way to get pedicures, making the idea of showing off their feet…unappealing.  Instead, try a nice slip on driving moccasin, like Calvin Klein’s Timmy from Piperlime.  Then throw on a messenger bag,  like the Jack Spade I showed you in Handbag/Manbag Pr0n.  Personally I’m pro-man jewelry, but since not everyone is, every man should have at least one really nice watch.  What I like about Nixon’s (the company, not the dead president) “24-20” chrono watch, is the contrast between the black and the bright silver, and the large face.  It’s available at Barney’s Co-op.

Just like the women’s outfit, mix it up: change the color of the shirt or use a nice colorful t-shirt; put it with jeans and a suit jacket and it’s appropriate for dinner out.  Once you’ve mastered the art of mixing and matching this kind of an outfit, call your blogger. She’s single!

..

There you go! Your very first outfits of the day, for Friday March 6, 2009.

Until next time, it was good for me; tell me, was it good for you?
